Remember these kitchen colors from yesterday?

Well... I can't do anything about the tile. However, I've already switched colors for the paint scheme! Now I'm thinking a sunny, buttery, creamy, soft yellow.

Check out this funky and awesome color combination!

The problem will be finding the right yellow...

something without green, orange, or brown hues.

Keeping in mind that our cabinets are unpaintable and white,

the tile is blue, and the floor will one day be a darker hardwood....

Do you have any great yellow colors to share?

Making our "temporary house" feel more like a home starts with a plan...

    Obviously, making our "temporary house" feel like a home will take LOTS of time and moneyand can only be done as time and finances permit. Therefore, these choices may change. ;o)

    Problem... I am NOT an interior designer, although I'd like to play one on TV, and REALLY struggle with picking things out and seeing it to completion. I have a tendancy to jump around, make constant changes, and drive my hubby batty! I can hear him right now, "stick with it to completion and then see what you think." I know he's right. When I have "stuck with it", I have usually ended up liking it. But after the paint-four-times-going-on-five hallway fiasco, I'm thinking... "hmmmm". Therefore, BEFORE we start this process- I shall overly plan, pull my hair out, and drive my family and friends crazy.

    First order of business: Kitchen paint! Second on the list: Dining room overhaul. Third: Living room. And then, we'll head upstairs... :) This is what we've chosen (so far) for the G-Team casa.

Master bedroom... We currently have it paing a grey that we found on a discount rack. It works, but not quite the color we were going for. Trim: White. Accent colors: the first blue in the album, black, white, and the green from the dining room. I need to totally refinish the dresser and night stand. (That is will be learning precess.) The hardwood floors also need to be refinished.

Dining room... Trim and ceiling will be white. I also need to paint the light fixture... black! Accent colors and curtains will match the living room. I really want to paint the china hutch. However, the girls are protesting. We'll see... I also LOVE our table, but need to be inspired as to what to do to it. We've discovered hardwood floors under the marble. What we do with it will depend on it's integrity. Regardless, we want wood and a throw rug. :)

Kitchen... 5 walls golden yellow and 2 walls brick house red! (These colors look much better in person.) Trim: White Ceiling: White Cupboards: White Counter and backsplash: Blue tile. Accent colors: FUN! Flooring: "Someday" wood.

Kitchen... This is what we have as our counter and back splash. We've wanted to replace it, but have not been able to afford to. Therefore, it has sat on the counters and mocked me for 6 years! I have NEVER liked it... until now. I'm actually excited to see what it'll look like next to the new paint colors and the new "someday" wood floor.

Living Room & Hallway... Ceiling and trim will be white. Considering painting the front and closet door black. (We'll see...) Accents: wanting to bring in more black, white, the yellow from the kitchen, the green from the dining room, and a dash of the lovely blue from the first picture. We are having to work around out furniture. No moula to replace. For now we are also working around the carpet. Eventually. we'd like to have a sandy, shaggy, feelgoodonthefeet carpet. Per the marble in the entry: jackpot found... wood! We'd like to refinish it. We'll see... We may have to replace. Ugh! For the curtains... I'm thinking creamy white with a green, yellow, and black pattern on the bottom- hanging on a black rod. I'll have to make these bad boys! Yuck... The fireplace also needs an overhaul. For the floor by it, I'm thinking a black tile. I just don't know how wood would hold up there.) Dunno... We found brick behind the marble and am thinking about painting it white. (That area gets SO dirty due to the fireplace smoke. hmm...) For the mantle, I'd like a dark wood. Again... dunno! For the cover thingy, I'm thinking black. Honestly, the fireplace area has me completely stumped!!! Any ideas?

Bathroom... This room requires the most work! Colors: One of these. Accents: Black, white, and splashes of ?. (Depends on the color chosen.) We need to toally gut this room out and start from scratch. Not...good...

We say that when we read God's Word, we are looking for direction. But are we really? Or do we just read for what we want to hear.

A friend added: "We read to better understand who God is and His attributes. Once we know what he expects from us then the rest starts to fall into place and we begin to appreciate all that is around us and given to us whether good or bad. We take encouragement and correction from the Word as we chew on it daily and savor every morsel."

Today, may I read for Your Truth... whether it encourages me or convicts me, I know that I'll be growing in You! Help me to be honest with myself and, more importantly, You.

Oat 'n Peanut Butter Cookies (for Dogs)

Oat 'n Peanut Butter Cookies

Ingredients:

2 C WW Flour

1 1/2 C Old Fashioned Oats

1/2 C Peanut Butter (natural is best...)
4 Tsbp molasses (Blackstrap preferred)

6 Tbsp Olive Oil

1 C Water

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Combine the four and oats. Add the PB, molasses, and oil. Add water. Blend well. This mixture may seem sloppy, but it will mix and roll perfectly!

Roll (or pat) mixture out to about 1/4 in thick. Either cute in squares or use a small cookie cutter to make shapes.

Bake in preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until firm.

Remove cookies onto cooling rack and let set out overnight.

Store cookies for about 2 weeks in sealed container.

Healthy and Not-So-Healthy Dog Food!

Our dog was displaying symptoms ranging from diarrhea to dandruff to vomiting. Our original vet recommended Science Diet Lamb & Rice. However, her symptoms did not improve... but worsened. We then chatted with a very bright young lady at our local pet store about the problems. She informed us that beagles are notorious for corn, wheat, and soy allergies (which Science Diets products contain) and encouraged us to try ByNature. We bought a bag and... voila! Her symptoms disappeared!

We decided to change vets and talked this situation over with our new vet. He totally agreed with the allergies. He had personally never heard of ByNature, but he began recommending certain foods such as: pumpkin, sweet potatoes, brown rice, misc. vegetables, salmon, barley, flax, duck, misc. berries, etc.

As soon as we got home, I took out the bag of dog food and discovered that what we had been feeding her was exactly what he recommended! Per the table scrap debate? You bet she can have them! As long as they're healthy... low in fat, low in salt, low in sugar...

What about treats... We have been buying Peanut Butter & Molasses treats made by a company called Blue Dog Bakery (can be found at PetsMart and Walmart). Yes, they contain wheat. But, they are used as "special treats" and she is doing just fine. ...And because the treats contain "brewers yeast", we have not had to treat her for fleas in almost 2 years!

FYI: Per our vet's advice, we switch her from duck to salmon to pork every 3 months. There is just too many benefits found in each of them to keep them from her. However, we switch with care. We go half-n-half for a week and then put her fully on the new food. In doing this, we have not experienced a problem. Read here on the recommended way to do this!

Benefits of certain ingredients for our healthy dogs...

Wheat: It is high in B vitamins (for enhanced immunity), high in vitamin E for heart health and it possibly gives protection from some cancers. Whole wheat flour also contains selenium (which may protect against lung cancer), and potassium and zinc. It’s one of the best preventives to constipation!

Wheat Germ: Wheat germ is rich in fiber for heart health, cancer protection and good digestive function. In addition, it’s a great source of vitamins like B complex and vitamin E. Wheat germ is one of the very best sources of zinc! Substitute 2-4 tablespoons of wheat germ for flour in your dog treats recipes to make them healthier.

Disclaimer: Some dogs/breeds are sensitive to wheats. Therefore, if a recipe calls for wheat flour, try rice flour or oat flour! Our dog is sensitive to wheat, but can handle it in treats- just not a part of her regular diet.

Flax: Flax seed is an excellent source of alpha-linolenic acid, a type of Omega-3 fatty acid. Omega-3 fatty acids are critical for your pet's skin and coat health. They can prevent dry, itchy skin, shedding, and hot spots. Omega-3 fatty acids may reduce or or stop the need for cortisone shots or steroids in dogs suffering from allergies. They can also heal cracked paws and nails. Flax seed oil may provide relief to dogs with mild cases of arthritis. Omega-3 fatty acids may help stop tumor growth in dogs with cancer. Flax seeds contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. Insoluble fiber in flax seed speeds the passage of food through the digestive system. It also builds stool volume, preventing constipation. Many vets recommend the addition of ground flax seed to a dog's regular food for these benefits, and also because heavier stools will help evacuate the dog's anal sacs, preventing impaction.

The Veterinarians Guide to Natural Remedies for Dogs recommends that flax seed oil be added daily in the following dosages to the food of dogs with chronic skin problems: 1 tsp. of oil for small dogs; 2 tsp. for medium dogs; 1 tbsp. for large dogs; and for giant breeds, 2 to 3 tbsp.
Pumpkin: Pumpkin is packed with nutrition. It boasts huge amounts of vitamin A for resistance to infections, to improve night vision and keep the body's membranes healthy. And pumpkin leads the pack in staving off cancer with its vitamin A content. Pumpkin also contains potassium for good blood pressure and iron for healthy blood. If your dog or cat is having the occasional case of constipation or diarrhea, one of the things that might help is canned pumpkin. You can use canned pumpkin in its pureed form, but NOT pumpkin pie filling! (FYI: Our beagle has chronic anal sac problems and our vet has recommended 2 Tbsp of pumpkin puree 2 to three times a week.)

Peanut Butter: Peanut butter is made of Vitamin H and Vitamin E. The first vitamin increases the sheen of your dog's coat, improves the quality of dog skin and the strength of the nails. The second helps your dog's immune system, which protects your dogs from disease. It recommended, however, that you try to give your dog salt-free & sugar-free varieties. (FYI: In moderation, we give or dog just regular peanut butter and she has not have a problem.)

Fish Oil: Cancer prevention – Many veterinarians are now prescribing fish oil as a supplement for dogs who have been diagnosed with cancer as the omega-3’s slow down the growth and spread of cancer cells.
Treatment of arthritis – Fish oil reduces the pain and stiffness associated with arthritis by reducing the inflammation associated with the disease. EPA protects the tissue that lines the joint, reducing the effects that enzymes have upon the tissue.
Prevent heart disease – Fish oil has a mild “blood thinning” effect, essentially reducing the pressure on the cardiovascular system and maintaining a healthy blood pressure.
Improve cholesterol levels – The introduction of higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids into your dog’s diet helps to prevent the build-up of unhealthy cholesterol levels, reducing the build-up of arterial plaque.
Maintain healthy skin and coat – EPA and DHA are important components in the health and well-being of your dog’s skin and coat.
Supports emotional health – Many dogs who experience separation anxiety, are nervous or depressed often experience a calming effect with the addition of fish oil to their diet.
Bananas: Bananas are high in soluble carbohydrates, so they're an excellent source of energy. The antioxidants they contain are helpful to a dog's fur and skin. Bananas are also rich in Vitamin C, are low in sodium, and rich with potassium.
Carrots: Carrots are high in every vitamin from A, B, C, D, E and K. Not to mention that they're packed with potassium, calcium and iron, while being low in calories at the same time. Carrots can be given raw, or baked or cooked.
Green Beans: Green beans to promote weight loss in obese dogs!
Strawberries: Strawberries are known for containing an enzyme that helps to whiten teeth, which can be helpful for you pet on top of the vitamins they pack. However, while your dog will happily scarf down an entire bowl of these, keep in mind they're high in sugar and should be given in moderation.
Apples: They contain potassium, which stimulates the immune system, and pepsin, which helps the stomach.
Broccoli:
Cabbage: Rich in vitamins, good for digestive system and skin.
Cucumbers: Good for teeth and bones due to potassium content; can combine with carrots to promote a healthy liver and kidneys; in juice form, a good diuretic ... peel cucumbers unless organically grown!
Celery: Chopped or juiced; can help with arthritis.
Parsley: Parsley rids the body of bladder and kidney infections, cleanses the blood, operates as a blood thinner, builds the immune system, prevents cancer and improves stomach and liver functions. Although parsley shouldn't be used while animals are nursing, it's beneficial to help dogs stop lactating and to treat afterbirth pains. Parsley is rich in vitamins, potassium and other minerals. Once or twice a week, parsley can be added to your dog's daily meals. This will cleanse the kidneys and help fight disease. (Also helps with doggy breath! Just boil a little parsley in water. Let water cool and serve your dog.)
(Disclaimer: As with any diet for your pet, balance and moderation is the key; don't replace more than 20% of their meal with fruits and vegetables. Also keep in mind that while a wide variety of fruits and vegetables are healthy for your pet, always check with your veterinarian before making any big dietary changes. Some fruits/vegetables can be harmful or even fatal, such as onions, garlic, avocados, grapes, raisins or any citrus fruits (as the acid will upset their stomach). Always start your dog out on small amounts of fruits and vegetables if they're unaccustomed to eating them so their digestive system has a chance to adapt.)
Alfalfa: Alfalfa is a powerful healing herb rich in vitamins and minerals. It functions as a kidney tonic, laxative, diuretic and blood purifier. It's often used to treat urinary tract infections, kidney infections, ulcers, improve liver function and digestive disorders. Alfalfa works as an enzyme for improved digestion in dogs. Give 2 tsps of chopped alfalfa sprouts to your dog with each meal every day for good digestion.
Cinnamon: Anti-inflammatory qualities—help with painful joints and arthritis. Helps regulate blood sugar—good for diabetics. Improves circulation—good for the heart. Can help improve digestion and relieve upset tummies. May help lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels. Is a natural food preservative—your treats last longer!

(Disclaimer: Excessive consumption of cinnamon does have its side effects. Dogs and humans are very similar in genetics. However, the digestion of some human foods will be hampered by the dog's shorter digestive tract so that consumption of a large amount of some human food can be detrimental to the health of the dog. The dog may develop an allergic reaction to the spice. Itching, rashes and irritation of the skin are the common outcome of cinnamon ingestion. A dog with existing kidney problems may experience total breakdown of the kidneys due to excessive consumption of cinnamon.)

Brewers Yeast: Brewer's yeast is a great source of B vitamins such as biotin, trace minerals such as zinc, proteins, and amino acids. The amino acids and vitamins can help make your dog's skin healthier and its coat shinier. Second, brewer's yeast is often recommended by holistic vets to help strengthen dogs' immune systems. Brewer's yeast is also a common natural remedy for dogs with fleas. It is thought to work against fleas because it contains sulfur compounds that make your dog less palatable to fleas. However, some dogs will have allergies to this product. Read more here...

Foods to avoid...

Chocolate: contains a chemical compound that is both a heart stimulant and diuretic and potentially fatal to dogs.
Onions and garlic: whether in one large dose or smaller doses, onions and garlic contain a toxin that can build up in the dog's system, damaging red blood cells.

Grapes and raisins: an unknown substance in grapes and raisins can cause damage to the dog's kidneys and potentially cause renal failure.

Coffee, tea and soft drinks containing caffeine: caffeine of any kind can be toxic to the heart and nervous systems.
Fruit pits and seeds: many contain cyanogenic glycosides which can lead to cyanide poisoning.

Avocado: all parts of the avocado are toxic to dogs.

Macadamia nuts: contain an unknown toxin to dogs that can cause paralysis and damage to the nervous system.

Potato peelings, rhubarb and tomato leaves: contain oxalates which can cause problems with digestive, nervous and urinary tract systems.
Milk and dairy products: while not impacting all dogs, some dogs have intolerance for milk products causing gas and diarrhea.

Baby food: can potentially contain onion powder causing red blood cell damage. If fed in large quantities can also lead to a nutritional imbalance.

Raw fish: can cause a thiamine deficiency which can cause lack of appetite, seizures and potential death.

Baking soda, baking powder and salt: in large amounts these ingredients can cause an electrolyte imbalance potentially leading to muscle spasms or congestive heart failure.
Nutmeg: can cause tremors, seizures and nervous system damage.

I've seen this on a few blogs and have received this in a few past emails. So now, I shall share it with YOU!

For the ♥ of Pete! What is the name of that ride? ...hmmmm... The one where you excitingly jump on and then unexpectingly get sucked to the wall and the floor just drops out from under you?

You know... The one where you have it all planned out only to discover that you had no idea what was right around the corner. The one where you rip your schedule, throw books away, stomp your feet, discover you forgot important items in the middle of a lesson, wake up in the middle of the night thinking about things that should only be allowed to enter our little minds during the day, etc.

OMGosh! "Belly" just started Saxon (a switch from Lifepac) and Apologia (a switch from "Bill Nye" DVDs - kind of joking). Both girls just started Mystery of History and IEW! (I have never taught either, so this is interesting.) Today, "Katie" is switching from Saxon to Teaching Textbooks! "Katie" also started a Shakespeare unit... Let me tell ya! Be CAREFUL which book ya buy! [said with great emphasis] We had QUITE an awkward and VERY graphic surprise and Mama had to do some fast throwing away of books and baptizing of our minds. (I really wasn't expecting to cover a "health lesson"...)

Now for Spanish... My awesome mom generously bought Rosetta Stone. Yeah! So thoughtful! However, when I went to load it up, I was surprised to find out that it might be a "boot*leg" copy!!! OUCH!

And to boot it all off... I thought I had ALL of my lesson planning done for co-op (which starts Monday) only to find out that I skipped the first week of Answers Academy... No DVD for that day...! We might just be staring at each other in the faces for an hour... and I was just sitting down to print the syllabus and worksheets for both classes (Answers Academy and the Young Women class) only to discover that I just ran out of printing paper and my computer is blinking strange codes at me. So I shall make a mad dash to the store in a few minutes for the paper and do a "laying of hands" on the computer. :0)

I love homeschooling!!! It's really quite the medical solution for peeps with anxiety and OCD! :0)

Reasons One Should Stay Away From...

“Twilight”

(These reasons are not put in any particular order.)

#11. From Wikipedia,

The notion of vampirism has existed for millennia; cultures such as the Mesopotamians, Hebrews, Ancient Greeks, and Romans had tales of demons and spirits which are considered precursors to modern vampires. However, despite the occurrence of vampire-like creatures in these ancient civilizations, the folklore for the entity we know today as the vampire originates almost exclusively from early 18th century Southeastern Europe, when verbal traditions of many ethnic groups of the region were recorded and published. In most cases, vampires are revenants of evil beings, suicide victims, or witches, but they can also be created by a malevolent spirit possessing a corpse or by being bitten by a vampire. Belief in such legends became so pervasive that in some areas it caused mass hysteria and even public executions of people believed to be vampires.

As Christians, should we be reading something that glorifies something like vampirism?

#10. The third book, Eclipse, is quite heavy with mentionings of the occult.

#9. Can an evil person ever truly be good? Yeah, if he repents and changes his lifestyle. However, the vampires in “Twilight” don't. (Remember, light and dark cannot mix. [1 John 1:5-7, 2 Cor. 6:14])

#8. This popular series teaches unbiblical attitudes toward authority. For example: Bella doesn't show respect to her parents – she treats them like they're totally clueless; and every night, Edward sneaks into Bella's bedroom to sleep next to her. (Nothing happens- we'll get into that later, but still... They are unmarried and sleeping in the same bedroom.) On top of that, she lies to her dad about it. (Colossians 3:20, Eph. 6:1-2)

#7. These books encourage young ladies to be with men who are overly controlling and possibly abusive. In one part, Edward becomes angry, grabs Bella quite harshly, practically drags her to his car, shoves her in, and drives off – dangerously.

#6. The relationship(s) portrayed in these books are unhealthy and obsessive. e.g. Bella is truly obsessed with Edward – her “vampire squeeze”. She overly wants to please him in every way and is even willing to lose her soul to be with him. (For awhile, Edward practically stalks her! EX: At night, he sneaks to her place to watch her sleep. When Bella learns this, she invites Edward to sleep next to her.)
I question... Why are we making abuse and obsession seem romantically soft, fluffy, and dreamy?

#5. In the last book, Breaking Dawn, Bella and Edward get married and “marital intimacy” is mentioned – heavily. True, they are married, but did Ms. Meyers have to write about "IT"? (Gross!) Whatever happened to leaving things to one's own imagination?

There's a part almost halfway through Twilight in which Edward bends down to smell the fragrance of Bella's bare neck. “Just because I'm resisting the wine doesn't mean I can't appreciate the bouquet,” he says. (Many say there's more sex in that one scene than all the making out in Harry Potter.)

#4. “Twilight” is teaching the exact opposite of what the Bible teaches about goodness and salvation. The Bible says that good works alone will not get us into Heaven. We need to believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that He died to save us from our sins, and that He resurrected from the dead. These books teach that if you're "good enough"... you can be saved. (Eph. 2:8-9)

Furthermore, Bella even tosses up the hope of salvation to be with Edward. He tries to convince her that if she becomes a vampire, she will be doomed to eternity without any hope of being saved. "Compared to the fear that he didn't want me, this hurdle – my soul – seemed almost insignificant," she thinks. A couple pages later she says to Edward, "So let's both just be hopeful, all right? Not that it matters. If you stay, I don't need heaven." (This sounds like one troubled chick)

#3. It's so easy to say that it's “no biggie” to see the latest flick, or read what everyone else is reading. If we are to love God with our hearts, souls, and-yeah, minds, we need to think about what we're filling our minds and hearts with. We must ask, “Does this reflect biblical truth?” No, this series definitely does not. If we are to love and serve Him yet we fill our minds with ungodly thoughts, are we truly loving and serving Him with our whole heart? (Matthew 22:37) We're supposed to love God. Does reading a series that deals with so many “anti-God” subjects reflect our love for Him?
I am trying to truly love Jesus with all my heart, my soul, and my mind...

#2. A slogan I have seen on T-shirts: “The forbidden fruit tastes the best.” And that's exactly what “Twilight” is teaching youths. It's saying that what you are not supposed to have is the best. Think about it: forbidden fruit tastes the best. Isn't that what Satan used to get Eve to disobey God?

#1. True, this series is entirely fiction; and no, it's not "the Bible" (obviously). But Christian readers/fans should and must be on guard to discern if the spiritual statements in books/films/music match the truth of the Bible... and if not, obstain from it. (Romans 12:2, Psalm 119:9)

In closing, I hope that what I have written helps parents or youths decide whether or not this popular series is worth reading and watching. I have not personally read the books or seen the movies, but I have looked up numerous reviews-both Christian and secular-which have helped me write my own. A few helpful sites that you might consider using for this title and many others are: Plugged In, Teen Lit Review, and Book Angles. My mom and I use these as resources before we see a movie, read a book, or listen to a certain singer/group.

Update from "Mum": When Stephanie Myers was asked about what inspired her to write this, this is how she answered: "I woke up (on that June 2nd) from a very vivid dream. In my dream, two people were having an intense conversation in a meadow in the woods. One of these people was just your average girl. The other person was fantastically beautiful, sparkly, and a vampire. They were discussing the difficulties inherent in the facts that A) they were falling in love with each other while B) the vampire was particularly attracted to the scent of her blood, and was having a difficult time restraining himself from killing her immediately...
...All this time, Bella and Edward were, quite literally, voices in my head. They simply wouldn't shut up. I'd stay up as late as I could stand trying to get all the stuff in my mind typed out, and then crawl, exhausted, into bed (my baby still wasn't sleeping through the night, yet) only to have another conversation start in my head. I hated to lose anything by forgetting, so I'd get up and head back down to the computer. Eventually, I got a pen and notebook for beside my bed to jot notes down so I could get some freakin' sleep. It was always an exciting challenge in the morning to try to decipher the stuff I'd scrawled across the page in the dark..."

On another occasion she states: "I had this weird... I was sleeping in the guest room because my husband had a horrible cold and so I wasn't like in my normal surroundings and I had this dream that Edward actually showed up and told me that I got it all wrong and like he exists and everything but he couldn't live off animals... and I kind of got the sense he was going to kill me.

It was really terrifying and bizarrely different from every other time I've thought about his character."

After reading this, if you are struggling with the question as to whether or not you should allow your child, grandchildchild, or even yourself to read this series... I urge you to go to this link and ask yourself these simple questions:

1.Question - Me and God
How is this thing building my relationship with the Lord?
How does my interest in this area compare with my time invested in my relationship with the Lord?
Am I still putting the Lord first?

2.Question - Me and the People Around Me
Is this creating conflict in my family?
Is this creating conflict with others?
Does it offend other believers or is it confusing them in their faith?
What am I saying to my non-Christian friends or what example am I setting for others?

3.Question - The Bible
What does the Bible have to say about this?
Who does it glorify-God or Satan?
Jesus or the things of the World?

4.Question - Me and Twilight (or whatever applies)
How is this affecting what I think about; my attitude, heart, and mind?
Does it help me to do what is right according to God? Or, does it promote things of the World?
Does it distract me from the Lord and my relationships with others? Serving, praying, reading Bible, ministry etc…
Does it cause me to say, think, or do things that are contrary to Jesus and his life?

Are You Feeling the Call to Homeschool?

We can remember when we first felt God calling our famil
into the world of "homeschooling".
We were scared and kept asking, "Are you sure, Lord?"

We felt so unqualified and ignorant in this area.
We didn't have any homeschooling friends to ask for advice and many of our friends and family were less than encouraging in this area.

God gave us Philippians 4:13 to claim over and over and over again.

"I can do ALL things through Christ Jesus who gives me strength."

Although we are still so underqualified- through Him we are doing it, loving it, and encouraging others to claim His promise and join us on this awesome adventure!

Short and Sweet... Jesus Loves Me

My mom came over for dinner the other night and some really funny memories were brought back to life.

Mom reminded me of the time that she was driving her van with "Katie" (at the time about 4 years old), my little brother, and his friend in the back. The boys were discussing some really scary movies and my mom reminded them that "Katie" was with them and that they shouldn't be talking about that kind of stuff.

My brother's friends said, "She don't know anything."

"Katie" contemplated on what he said for a moment.

Then a big thought came out of her little mind.

She said, "Grandma, I may not know much. But I know that Jesus loves me... the Bible tells me so!"

Oh, If the rest of us would just keep things simple like a child.

When in the midst of hard times or facing difficult situations,
just cling to His promises... and trust His every word.

This I know, because the Bible tells me so!

Short and Sweet... on Homeschooling

In anticipation of "officially" kicking off our school year:

Homeschooling is worth every gray hair that we "might" earn or hairs that we lose from pulling them out.

What a blessing it is for me to be home with our girls all day! So many awesome memories to cherish... :)

All of our learning hurdles jumped are like those precious "first step" memories...
and I can say that I was there.

SB 'Peanut Butter Cup' (Phases 1, 2, 3)

Serves 1

Ingredients
1 no sugar added fudgsicle
1-2 tablespoons peanut butter
1-2 tablespoons light frozen whipped topping or whipping cream

Instructions
Take a no sugar added fudgsicle and scrape it off the stick (microwaving it for about 15 seconds helps). Then stir in 1-2 tablespoons of natural peanut butter and 1-2 tablespoons of light whipped topping. Mix together and enjoy.

FYI: This dessert is so sinfully yummy, but - oh, soooooo good and is helping me stay on track and keeping me away from the $1 McD sundaes!
Try this: If you excel in patience... Put your finished yummy goodness in the freezer for about 15 minutes. So creamy...
Or try this: Freeze it until forzen all the way! The best ice cream...EVER!
One more thought: Just because it's "diet", does not mean that you can double the recipe or eat it for every snack. We must still practice moderation... :0)

For as far back as I can remember, I have struggled with fear. Fear, at times, that has been all-consuming and often crippling. As a little girl: clowns, Santa, alcohol, men, snakes, loud noises, strange places, being alone, darkness, strange smells, "strangers", and angry people.

When I was about five, my Uncle decided to surpise us and show up at the house in a Santa outfit. I remember running to my mother's bedroom and burying myself in the closet. As I type this I can still feel the trembling in my little body... Santa would invade my dreams with terrors and darkness.

One day I was playing in the front yard and heard a very loud noise getting closer and closer. Feeling the vibrations under my feet, I ran. I ran for the safest place I could find. That day, my fear was motorcycles.

My father was an alcoholic. I can still smell the odor of alcohol mixed with cigarettes, peppermint, and aftershave. When my father was sober, he was a wonderful daddy. He played with me, took me for long walks, and held me. He would encourage me, tell me he loved me, and that he was so proud of me. But... when he was drinking, he was not the same man. He would say confusing things to me out of deep, dark depression. He would break doors down and I would see fear in my mom's eyes. I can remember having to run and hide. I can remember police showing up many a time. God's completely healed my heart towards my father so much so that now I have such an aching heart for people who struggle with demons of alcoholism. However, my deep dark fears have still tried to control me... and, at times, have won.

My mother controlled my fears with her words and acts of anger. Sticks and stones may break my bones, but the words cut even deeper. I was consumed with self-doubt, feelings of being nothing but a failure, fear of becoming my father. Instead of being nurtured and reassured, my fears were confirmed by doctors prescribing medications. I only now realize that I never suffered from "clinical depression". My enviroment was trying to destroy me. Again, I love my mom and completely understand that she was deeply hurting also. She didn't know what to do. I will not make excuses for her, but I do understand her and now my soul is beginning to flood with so many wonderful memories. God has and still is amazingly healing both of us. (I love you, Mom!)

As I became a teenager my fears changed, but were still there and more intense. My nightmares consumed me. I would put off sleep until my eyes would force themselves shut. That's when the terror would begin. Memories of horrible acts, hurting words and actions of desperation and anger, and demonic phenomenon would flood into my inner subconscious. From lack of sleep, I would fall asleep in class, was unable to concentrate, and suffered from non-stop headaches.

As an adult, my fears continued to evolve. Words and deep dark secrets from my past creeping in and controlling me. Being married and with children, my imagination would take control. Images of my children being hurt by "strangers", unable to protect them... dreams of my husband dying or leaving me... And most recently, Fears of my siblings who are so far from God... We've set boundaries, but my siblings know no such word. Being controlled by the enemy, consumed by past hurts and unhealed wounds, and full of his deceit and anger, they seek to destroy others and justify their actions. My heart bleeds for them, my prayers for them continue, but I have lived in fear of them too long.

Today I claim that I will no longer live in fear. This fear that has consumed me and tried to control me for many years is not of God, but of the enemy. In the strong name of Jesus- I will rebuke fear when it begins to creep in, I will confess and release my fear to the Lord and ask for His renewed strength, and walk in His power.

If you are struggling today with fear... Please know that you are not alone. Let God take control. Release your fears to Him...

This morning as I pour over all of the blogs that inspire me (see left sidebar), I noticed A LOT of peeps are sharing their home and school schedules. Well... Ours is not as fancy-shmancy as most, but I thought ya'll might want to see ours! Yes, this is where my little OCD kicks in...

To answer a few of your questions...

No. We are not perfect, although we strive to be. :0)

Yes. We have those days when it feels as though the sky is falling.

Yes. There are those days that we feel as though our wheels are spinning, but the hamsters are dead.

No. I do NOT carry a whip around with me and have daily flogging rituals.

Yes. There are days when we all throw our hands in the air and say "whatever".

Why schedule? Having a schedule really helps us all to focus, prioritize, and get things done! And... when we realize that in everything we do, whether in speech or actions, we are doing in His name AND that we are to have a happy heart as we do it (even while cleaning the toilets and our "doggy blessings"), we feel so much more motivated!

There are also jobs and things that come along that are not listed, but our girls are expected to gladly jump right in and be a part of the "team". There is no "but it's not in our job description" attitude allowed. :0)

Lemon Berry Muffins...

I found this recipe on Recipezaar a few years ago and it truly is one of our summer favorites!

Lemon Berry Muffins!

Yields: 6 jumbo or 12 normal size

Ingredients...

Batter:

2 C all-purpose flour

1 C sugar

1 Tbsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

2 eggs, slightly beaten

1 C *buttermilk

1/2 C vegetable oil

2 tsp lemon juice

2 tsp lemon zest

1 C **berries (fresh or frozen [thawed], but fresh is best!)

Glaze:

1 C sifted powder sugar

2 Tbsp lemon juice

1 Tbsp milk

Directions:

1. In a large bowl- combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a small bowl- mix eggs, buttermilk, oil, lemon juice, and zest.

2. Stir liquid mixture into flour mixture, just until moistened. Gently fold in berries. Fill well-greased or paper-lined muffin cups two-thirds full.

3. Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes, or until center of muffin springs back when lightly touched.

4. Let muffins slightly cool and remove from pan and place on cooling rack.

5. For Glaze: Mix powdered sugar and lemon juice. Add milk until smooth.

6. Drizzle glaze on top of slightly cooled muffins and enjoy!

*Buttermilk substitutions:

Why Teach Art...

"Does teaching art matter?"

In my humble little opinion I believe it's important to introduce our children to a wide array of the arts (including music and drama), books, history, science, etc for several reasons. After all, we could have living in our home the next Picasso, Jane Austen, Hemingway, Einstein, Ken Ham (had to throw him in), Chilhuly, etc. Little genious' just waiting to to be discovered. Locked potentials waiting for Dad or Mom to give them the key.

When "Belly" was younger, she was our "child of patience" ... EXTREMELY active, VERY creative in play, and quite mechanical. Yes- she crawled early, ~~walked~~ ran early, and she was also known for us purchasing stock in the Band-Aid company! She was our child that was constantly fighting dragons, building forts, inventing board games, and making the living room look like a hurricane hit. She was the little girl who would take things a part and not remember where all the pieces disappeared to. She will always be remembered for her more creative wall masterpieces in her bedroom... late at night or during her naps. With nicknames like Monkey, Hurricane, Houdini... She was the child that made me question everything I did as a parent.

Don't get me wrong... She has also been our child of joy and laughter. Our daughter that loves to cuddle and nurse us when we're ill. Our princess... so full of compassion, generosity, and a heart that loves to help. However, for quite some time, getting her to sit still for any lesson or "homework time" was a challenge. This made us question teaching topics like... art. Did we really need to teach that?

I knew that I would never be able to have her sit down for a huge art lesson. (This little Houdini would escape from her being strapped to a chair.) So we began with little things like: finger painting, playing with daddy's shaving cream on the table, *making mashed potato and pea towers, laying blocks out and making shapes or building tall towers! We'd head outdoors and draw in the dirt.

We began doing things like: gluing strange things to paper (cotton balls, noodles, beans, dirt, rocks, etc) to make interesting pieces that she could talk to me about. We also did A LOT of hand/foot tracing! I can remember one time running around with a piece of paper and a crayon, seeing what kind of different textures we could get from a wide array of objects (walls, floors, shoes, leaves, etc). We later moved into clay... beading... and on and on! I learned early on that I had to let her be a child and that it was okay to make messes.

Over these last two years, I have realized that "Belly" really has an awesome artistic eye. Our little Picasso has been growing and developing and showing that baby's got skill! And through doing a deeper study of individual artists- their lives, works, and inspirations (then trying to copy a few of their pieces) she really discovered how good she is and how much she truly enjoys using her imagination, seeing things differently, and creating masterpieces!

Yes, we have always done "art"... Just not the way most people would have pursued it. Ya see, sometimes we- as perfectionists- can squash whatever potential our child has by over pounding something into theirs heads in a very unpleasing way or by pounding it too much because of trying to meet the world's standards that have been set before us. We can also begin beating things into our children before our child is ready to receive. I've learned that "Belly" has always enjoyed art, just not they way most people would perceive it, and I believe that she enjoys it even more- because she was allowed to bloom at her own pace.

Now "Katie" is a different story. Being our first child and trying to figure this whole parenting thing out, I never spent much time with her doing art when she was little. Our time together was always spent reading, reading, and reading. Yes, we've done a few little things extremely sporadically. And over the last few years we have spent a couple weeks here and there doing a smaller portion of what "Belly" has done. She has just not shown much interest in it. However, I do believe that if I would've spent more time exploring her creative side when she was younger, things would be different and she'd be more interested in it now. Regrettably, I missed our opportunity to see if there was a hidden art closet somewhere in her soul. But... I still have made her do a few art studies over the last few years and I have tried to make it as fun as possible. Maybe there's still a key to be found... :0)

To humbly answer the question above... YES! But... when your child is young, make it as enjoyable, exciting, unorganized, accepting, and fun... as possible. We want to encourage... not overload and discourage (I am known for that!). Find a book of ideas and let her pick something out and go for it- mistakes and all! Have artsy stuff at her every access... so she can do it whenever she wants to. As she matures and can handle more... do more. When she's older, introduce her more into the life and inspiration parts. Even if your child shows no interest, persevere... get creative! Have fun! After all, you could be staring into the eyes of the next Mary Cassatt... just waiting to be set free!

Our recommendations for Art studies...

1. FUN! Finger painting, playing with daddy's shaving cream, make mashed potato and pea towers, lay blocks out and make shapes or build tall towers, do-a-dot art, head outdoors and draw in the dirt, glue strange things to paper (cotton balls, noodles, beans, dirt, rocks, etc) to make interesting pieces that you can talk about, hand/foot tracing, clay, play dough, beading, paper mache, etc.

2. Artistic Pursuits (Structured and classical.- for ALL ages!)

3. We have grown to LOVE Art Fun! and at ANY age, I think it'd be great!

Today I slept in again...

I robbed myself once more of the joy of glancing at my "knight" when I first opened my eyes. I neglected letting him know how much he is appreciated by not making him breakfast. I missed the chance to show him my love by not packing his lunch. I robbed him from words of encouragement that I could have shared before he rushed out the door. Today he will not hear the words "I love you" whispering in his ears... carrying him though his hard day and I will not feel the memory of his gentle kiss upon my lips as I teach our princesses and work in our castle.

Lord, forgive me.

May he know upon his return that he is valued, cherished, and loved.

Tomorrow I will do better...

Right now...

I have a call to make, a lunch to pack, and a privileged errand to run.

I Know Who Holds My Hand...

The girls and I have been reading through A Daughter's Worth and our most recent discussion was on fear... of the unknown. "What if Mom or Dad get really sick?" "What if we get in a really bad car wreck?" "What college should I go to?" "What will my future hold?" "What if I make the wrong choice?" "What if Daddy loses his job?" Etc. Etc. Etc. Well? What if?

As we read and meditated on Isaiah 41:13, this is the picture that God painted on my heart...

In a lush green yard was a joyful little child playing ball with her dog. Her Father sat on the front porch lovingly watching her play and warmly smiling. The child, being lost in her own dreamland of princesses and ponies, was giggling and jumping. The harder she seemed to laugh, the more joy that was revealed in her father's eyes.

What the sweet child could not see was the car that was a block away- the car that was now right around the corner and approaching quite rapidly. The father recognized the sounds of danger and began running in her direction. The ball rolled into the street and the unaware child ran out to retrieve it.

She glanced up and saw the image getting larger and larger. The horn blared. Tires screeched. Her eyes widened and heart seemed to stop.

She felt strong arms reach around her- lifting her high off the ground and bringing her to safety.

As they sat down on the curb, they cried and he held on to her- not letting her go.

Ava H Sturgeon writes: "Your Father knows what will happen tomorrow. In fact, He has forged ahead to make sure that you'll be safe and protected. And when rough spots happen along the way, He promises to stay right with you. Afterall, that's what good parents do."

Our Trip to Twin Falls! Part 2

Now... Where did we leave off?

Oh, yeah! Driving over the breath-taking Snake Canyon (Thanks, Dori!)

and entering Twin Falls...

Like I could take a picture while I was driving and... from this angle. :0)

What were we expecting? I don't know... maybe tumbleweeds rolling around everywhere, vicious hawks preying on dead visitors that never made their destination... if we were lucky we might see a few toothless people sitting around and waiting to put a noose around someone's unsuspecting neck. Instead we saw... Real stores, friendly people, paved roads, Costco and a awe-inspiring view!

(Places will appear in no particular order.) We cruised by the Golden Corral and McDs. We saw Costco, Walmart, Winco, Target, and a wonderful restaurant called the River Rock Grill. There was even a mall! As we drove on we spied a museum-looking carwash called the Rocket! We saw several more familiar restaurants, stores, and gas stations. Holy crud! Twin Falls even had a Starbucks (yuck)!

Forging ahead we came to every tourists nightmare... a half-pie in the road! 4 different ways to go. We anxiously (and spontaneously) chose the third street which looked like the obvious solution, but I soon discovered that I was wrong. So... we made a U-turn (illegal, maybe?) and back-tracked to where we had come from. Looking at the handy-dandy little map, we made our way to the correct road and journeyed on.

We spied a few older motels, a mexican meals-on-wheels (El Toro), more gas stations, a grocery store... a real hospital! This place was legit!

As we drove on, we began to notice that businesses were becoming more desolate, open fields, fresh air, and a scary looking "haunted house" appeared. We admired bean farms and then unsuspectingly hit a mad dip in the road while driving about 45 miles per hour. You know... The dips that make you choke on your own spit (hopefully not someone else's), take your breath, say things that you wouldn't normally say, laugh, and then beg to do it again. We then flew by a corn field.

Choking back tears... not from the spit or laughter, but from the beauty of the country, we turned on to a dirt road and pulled into "a" driveway. Thinking it was the wrong house, we began to pull back out. Hearing, "Wait! Wait!" and seeing my grown -up HS BF and several of her darlings come running towards the driveway, we pulled back in. Jumping outta the car, we plunged into the hot Idaho air and hugged a few of the ~~most important people~~ sweetest family members in my life.

Entering the cool house, we were greeted by her knight and her reluctant (and at the time, very quite) pajama-clothed son. We sat down in her cute & cozy living room and tried to catch our breaths. Holding her little "Miss Z", I was tempted to pinch myself. Was I really there? With my HS BF? The woman who I still remembered as my choir-singing alto buddy... The young chick that I'd stay up with all night giggling about nothing? The girl that I shared many tears with? The teen girl who I had confided all of my secrets with? The "innocent" little chickie-poo that I pulled "dangerous", daring, and stupid stunts with? The poor girl who's hair I fried?

Was I really there? And... sitting with our precious blessings?

Yes... I was there.

And God had brought us together

for a special, and much needed, encore...

Short & Sweet...

As we're driving on the freeway, having an nice intense discussion of what "~~global warming~~" [or...um...] "climate change" is...

"Belly" enthusiastically (and very sarcastically) said: "Mom, I know what's causing global warming!"

"Yes, Belly?" I tentatively questioned.

"Belly" replied matter-of-factly: "It's the polar bears!!! They keep peeing on the ice!"

At the same time we all yelled: "KILL THE POLAR BEARS!"

"Katie" threw in: "What about the penguins! All that sliding around has got be causing mass friction and friction causes heat. Thus? Global warming!"

At the same time we all yelled: "KILL THE PENGUINS!"

Disclaimer: To those of you who are sympathetic toward the "saving the polar bears cause" or like to think of penguins as cute little birdies, lighten up! We're only joking! However, a polar bear rug might look nice in front of our fireplace... NOT! Ooooo... Maybe as a blanket! :0)

All Purpose Cleaner

2 T.white vinegar (only distilled white vinegar)

1 t Borax

Hot water

A few drops of a mild dish detergent

5 drops of essential oil

(Lavender, Orange, Rose, etc….)

In a 16 oz. spray bottle add vinegar, borax and half hot water.

Swish around until borax has dissolved.

Add the drops of dish detergent and

fill the rest of the bottle with hot water.

Add the essential oil… & Shake.

Our Trip to Twin Falls! Part 1

The girls and I drove (by ourselves) to Twin Falls. This is the farthest I have driven without "Daddy" and anyone who knows me knows that this was a true feat! I was incredibly nervous, but "Katie" and I both felt that God had something so wonderful that He wanted to share with us on this journey and He did!

Here we are at the peak of the beautiful Blue Mountains with about 6 hours down, about 5 "pee stops" made, one trip to Jack in the Crack, 2 stops for gas (just to be safe) and 6 more hours to go!

What you dont see in this pic is the vacant Greyhound bus we're looking at. It was vacant, door wide open, and nobody to be found. Can anyone say, "Creepy"? Let's just say that as soon as this pic was taken (by a couple who just pulled in as we were running back to the car)... we were outta there! ("Katie", Did you get a pic of that?)

We stopped off in La Grande to pee and get an ice cream cone! This must be where everybody stops, as the line for an ice cream cone was outragious and the line for the bathroom was even worse! While we were in the lines we kept hearing this horrible whistling sound. It sounded like either a plane was going to land on our heads or a train was shouting out his warning before hitting us. I finally was able to take my turn in the pee room. R-E-L-I-E-F! I flushed the toilet and found the whisting culprit... the toilet. YIKES! As I walked out of the restroom, I was half expecting all the employees to cheer and wondering whether I should take a bow or start a wave. Knowing that I have 2 daughters that would probably melt and die right there on the spot, I thought better. Back on the road...

We stopped off again in Ontario. The last stop before I have to start pumping my own gas. This time we ALL had to pee and eat. As we were getting the car gased up, the attendent asked us where were going. "Twin Falls, Baby"! I said, thinking we only has about an hour left. He looked at me and smiled. Ever so tenderly he replied, "You still have 3 hours to go." What??? Mapquest lied... How did this 10 hour trip turn into 13 hours? Did I really have to stop and pee that much? Don't answer... Back on the road...

YaHoo! We were finally in I-da-ho! The home of many potatoes!!! And the speed limit? 75, Baby! And being the adventurous daring person that I am, I went 80! Boo-yah! As we drove further down, the speed immediately changed to 55... then back to 60... then 75 for a few seconds, then 45... I'm not kidding! Thank God I had my handy dandy little "radar detector" (called "Belly") in the backseat to keep me in check. I told her, "Sheesh! It takes time for my foot to adjust to the speed!" "Katie" said, "I'd love to see you tell that one to a judge..." ...We drove on...

We stopped off again in Boise at a rest stop... Yes, I have an old lady bladder! But what a rest area! It was almost worth the trip just to see such a fine establishment. So neat... so clean... As we're walking around the restroom getting decorating ideas and ooing and awing, I am sure that someone was probably wondering what planet we just landed from. When we got back in the car "Katie" said, "What a boring place. There wasn't any stories to read! Who am I going to call?" Back on the road...

Searching for radio stations... Let me tell ya, this area had more mexican channels than I had pee stops! We did hear one catchy tune. We weren't sure what they were singing, but it sounded something like: "I-want-sum-mustard...in-my-burr-i-to!!! Don-give-me-a-taco!!! Jus-a-burr-i-to!!! And-a-hot-dog-o!!!" As "Katie" began to do the shimmy and I played air marracas (Steph was somewhere on the floor), we passed a vehicle full of innocent bystanders who I am sure thought, "I don't think they are from around here".

Finally... We reached Twin Falls and are greeted with one of the most breath-taking views ever! I have no idea what the place was called, but it was a beautiful canyon that we drove over. I knew right then and there that this place was going to be amazing...

Treasures, Skills, and Abilities... Oh, My!

Philippians 3:4-10... Paul (the writer) started off by writing, "though I could have confidence in my own effort if anyone could. Indeed, if others have reason for confidence in their own efforts, I have even more!" He had done everything "right" and was born to a "good" family! He had every advantage!! He was circumsized, "a pure-blooded citizen of Israel, and a member of the tribe of Benjamin-a real Hebrew if there ever was one". He was a member of the Pharisees and strictly obeyed (without fault) the law! He even was so zealous regarding the his beliefs! He had it all going for him!

Paul went on to write, "I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God's way of making us right with himself depends on faith. I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death..." Wow!

Here's the Truth: According to Paul, none of his "accomplishments" or even his heritage mattered! He recognized that these "things" were worthless in comparison to having a REAL relationship with Christ Jesus! He wanted NOTHING to get in between him and getting to know Christ... his (and our) Savior!

Matthew 6:19-21 reads: "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." What are your "treasures"? Are your treasures in their proper place or are they in between you and our Savior?

Now... Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that your heritage doesn't matter. I am sure that to you and your family it is very important. And your education... well, duh! That's very important! Your talents? Double duh! God gave you your skills and abilities for a very special purpose. CARAMEL CORN IN 10 EASY STEPS!

CARAMEL CORN IN 10 EASY STEPS!
2/3 C unpopped popcorn
1 C REAL butter
2 C light brown sugar
1 tsp salt
1/2 C light corn syrup
1 tsp baking soda

1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees.
2. Spray a LARGE roasting pan with oil.
3. Pop the popcorn and set aside. (I do this with my air-popper and do 1/3 C at a time.)
4. Over medium heat, melt butter.
    Stir in brown sugar, salt, and syrup.
    Bring to a rolling boil.
5. Boil a full 5 minutes, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon.
    (You will lose a plastice spoon if you use one!)
6. Remove from heat and add soda. Stir well.
7. Spray a separate "strring spoon" with oil. (This one can be plastic.)
    Put popcorn in prepared pan.
    Pour caramel over corn and stir with prepared spoon to coat corn completely.
8. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes (with prepared spoon!).
9. When done baking, pour corn on to counter.
    Break into pieces and allow to cool.
10. ENJOY!

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent & Rinse!

Update: It's still working like a charm! But... I have learned NOT to use this on silverware. It does tarnish. Therefore, I will NOT try this on my pretty china. YIKES! But... all the other dishes are sparkling and squeaky!

Money's tight, bank account is empty, and we're trying to be "green" (whatever that is)... Would somebody please tell this to the "dust bunnies", grime, and fingerprints that seem to magically keep reappearing? No matter how tight things may seem, I still must find a way to dust, oil, mop, clean the shower, do laundry, scrub the kitchen, and wash dishes!!! What's a wife to do? Get creative!!!

Homemade dishwasher detergent & rinse... My first attempt left me less than impressed and quite disappointed. I added 1 Tbsp. Washing Soda and 1 Tbsp. Mule Borax to the little soap area box thing and I poured white vinegar into the rinse dispenser. (This was recommended on several sites.) The first few loads seemed okay. However, a yucky white film started to develop and it seemed like the mixture was not rinsing off all the way. June Cleaver would have been tapping her heals in disapproval. Blech!

Good news!!! I think that I have found a recipe that is well worth the time to make! I have been using this for a little over a week and am starting to believe that my dishes seem to be cleaner than they were when I was using a leading brand, Cascade and Electrasol! No kidding! June Cleaver and Harriet, Eat your hearts out! Crossing my fingers... but so far, so awesome!

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent and Rinse

Ingredients:

3 C Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda

3 C 20 Mule Team Borax

1 1/2 C coarse Kosher Salt

1 1/2 C food-grade Citric Acid*

Distilled White Vinegar

1. Mix the first four ingredients in a large bucket. Let sit over night. (This mixture will harden and you will think that you did something terribly wrong! Don't worry... You didn't "mess up" the recipe. It's just some science thing that happens due to the reaction of the chemicals combined.)

2. Break up the mixture. (I spent a long time doing this. Next time, I will just take the bucket outside and take a pointed shovel to it!)

3. Store the detergent in whatever container you chose! It will slightly clump up in the storage containers again, but is very easy to break up for use.

To use: Add a generous Tbsp spoon of the mixture to the soap dispenser and 2 Tbsp. of vinegar to your rinse dipenser! Run your machine and wash the dishes become squeaky clean!

*You are probably asking yourself, "What is Citric Acid and where can I buy it"? To be honest, I have absolutely no idea what Citric Acid is! All I know is that it can be used for preserving and is often used in making soaps and bath fizzies. And, no- "Fruit Fresh" is NOT the same thing!

You can purchase Citric Acid online and pay an over-rated amount and pass out due to the cost of shipping. OR... You can visit a local health food store. I purchased it at ours and paid only $2 per pound, much less than all the online stores!

How much money will you save by making this yourself? It all depends on where you buy your ingredients. (And to be honest, I am also trying to save time.) However, the gentleman at diy Natural broke it down as follows.

COST BREAKDOWN & SAVINGS

borax | 76oz = 4.99 | 8oz=.53/batch
washing soda | 55oz = 3.99 | 8oz=.57/batch
citric acid | 2oz = 1.15/batch
kosher salt | 48oz = 1.99 | 2oz= .08/batch
total for 32 oz = $2.33/batch
white vinegar (as rinse agent) | 1gal = 1.79 | 4oz=.06/fill
(**note** you only need to use 1 rounded tablespoon of this homemade detergent per load. If you feel it necessary… you may use a heaping tablespoon, but I do not.)

Palmolive® eco+ gel 75 ounce detergent – $3.79 – 28 loads = $0.14 per load
Jabs Homemade powder 32 ounce detergent – $2.33 – 50 loads = $0.05 per load

Here are the cost savings for my homemade rinse agent that goes along with this recipe:
FINISH® JET-DRY® Rinse Agent 4.22 ounce solution – $3.99 – 1 fill = $3.99 per fill
White Vinegar as a Rinse Agent 1 gallon solution – $1.79 – 1 fill = $0.06 per fill
That is a savings of 6650% on an effective rinse agent! Sounds too good to be true… but it is indeed true!

What's next? I'll be making "Spray 'n Wash"! I've already made a magical yummy smelling fabric softner, but I'll save that for a later post! (hee-hee)

Korean BBQ Marinade...

...for Pork, Beef, or Chicken...
Yields: 1 1/3 Cups

3/4 C soy sauce
3/4 C water
3 Tbsp. white rice vinegar (regular white would work)
1/2 C brown sugar
2 Tbsp honey
3 Tbsp sesame oil
2 Tbsp minced garlic
1/2 tsp ground black pepper
1-2 pinches cayenne pepper (to heat taste)

Mix all ingredients together.
Put meat in a Ziploc bag.
Add marinade.
For optimum flavor: Let sit in fridge, occasionally turning bag, for 2-3 days. (Trust me.. You won't regret it!)
Grill meat as normal...

"Belly's" Peanut Butter Cookies

These cookies are "da bomb" and one of our family's favorites!

Ingredients:
1 C brown sugar, firmly packed
1 C granulated sugar
1/2 C shortening
1/2/ C real butter, softened (NOT melted)
1 C peanut butter
2 large eggs, beaten
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp. baking soda
2 C flour

Directions:
-Cream together the sugars, shortening, butter, and peanut butter.
-Add the eggs and vanilla.
-In a different bowl, combine remaining dry ingredients.
-Add "dry ingredient mixture" gradually to "creamy mixture" until blended.
-Roll into tbsp size balls.
-Coat (roll) balls in granulated sugar.
-Place balls on cookie sheets - Do NOT mash with a fork!
-Bake at 350 for 10 minutes.
-Let cool on pan for a few minutes before removing.
-Cool on wire rack. (Cookies will be soft, but will set up nice.)
-Enjoy!!! (These are yummy warm and at room temperature!)

Variations:
-Add chocolate chips to dough! (YUM!)
-Dip room temperature cookie half-way into melted chocolate and let set.

Because the Christian Walk Never Stops...

Several months ago, we had the priviledge of becoming the hands and feet of Jesus... Chopping wood, weeding, mowing, sweeping, washing windows, scrubbing the kitchen down, vacuuming... And they did it ALL with a cheerful heart and happy hands and feet! Talk about shining for Jesus... And I just know that the family that we were with felt God's awesome and powerful love surrounding them...

1 John 3:18 (NIV) reads: "Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth." or as it reads in the NLT, "Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions." Or how about the Message, "My dear children, let's not just talk about love; let's practice real love."

My challenge for all of us... Churches should not be just about playing fun games and talking about Jesus. We need to teach this next generation (and ours) how to BE Jesus and share His wonderful love with others. The lesson these kids taught me was to... Stop talking! Start walking!!!

After reviewing two software programs- I highly recommend Homeschool Tracker for low cost, easy use, and awesome customer service. Their program is very thorough and top notch! They also offer a FREE basic program. However, the purchased one is MUCH more thorough, cleaner, and easier to use.
(On a brief side note, I did try - and unfortunately bought - Edu-Track. Their 14 day guarantee is NOT valid and smothered with "fine print". Furthermore; their customer service was not only horrible, more-over their manners borderlined on customer abuse.)

You can follow any religion you please - as long as it's on our list of accepted ones. We love to hear alternative voices - but if you try to talk to us about Jesus, we will silence you. We're totally in favor of `anything-goes' morality - unless you use that freedom with my girlfriend, or cut me off in traffic, or steal from my. It's not just hypocritical, it's fundamentally broken."

"I am a mother who bought this book for my 16 yr. old daughter. Witnessing other families allowing their young daughters to have relationships with young men has been difficult for me to see and the wondering of what my own daughter thinks or what she maybe thinking she might be missing out on. "A fabulous book! I thoroughly enjoyed it. It really encouraged me and affirmed many of the principles my parents have taught me. It urges girls to delight in the Lord, wait for the one he has for them, aviod the dangers of dating and guard their hearts. It addresses so many of the struggles all young ladies have. It deals with issues like handling crushes, boy/girl friendships, keeping thoughts pure, and relying on the guidance of parents. The allegory type story woven through the book is wonderful and I especially loved the symbols and illustrations used by the King when talking to his daughter (the princess). They really brought an even clearer understanding to the principles of keeping yourself pure, saving your heart for your future husband and not giving yourself away to others along the way. Sarah Mally did a beautiful job and I heartily recommend this book"

"Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?" Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times." -Matthew 18:21-22

Lessons I am learning...

1. Forgiveness is letting go of any hate, resentment, and malice towards the people who have wronged me.
Notice I did not list anger? Anger is a feeling... an emotion that is neither right or wrong. Anger can actually be very healthy when going through grieving or when reacting to particular situations. When thinking of anger, I immediately think of David and his writings in the book of Psalms. Was he not at times angry? Did he not at times cry out to God in anger? Yes... and God was always there. Please remember that anger is normal, as long as you do not let it control you or allow anger to drive you to sin.

2. Forgiveness is being able to sincerely pray for those who have hurt me and realizing that they are hurting, too.
I am learning to ask God to help me see the people that have hurt me through His eyes... Why? Because, hurting people, hurt people.

3. Forgiveness is realizing that I still love those who have hurt me and am longing to see true peace in their lives.

4. Forgiveness is not wanting or wishing for anything bad to happen to them.
I must not allow (or encourage) my anger to turn to sin.

5. Forgiveness is realizing that they are NOT the enemy.
They were/are just being used by evil, Satan, to hurt one of God's children- me. Satan is my enemy.

6. Forgiveness is realizing that Jesus died for them, too.
At the foot of the cross, our sins are equal. However, Christ died for all, including the ones who have hurt us the most...

What does forgiveness NOT mean? The following is an excerpt from our church bulletin last week and was written by our pastor:

"Forgiveness doesn't mean reconciliation. Because I forgive someone doesn't mean that I must have an ongoing relationship with that person. Sometimes that relationship...is toxic and a boundary may be necessary. Sometimes and ongoing relationship would enable that person to continue their bad behavior. Whether or not you pursue a relationship with someone who has hurt you must be between you and God.
Forgiveness is not excusing. Forgiveness is not denying that the one who has caused the hurt is not responsible for their actions. In fact, in many cases, justice would still be important. For example, a believer would want to forgive someone who had robbed their house; but, in most cases, would also press charges so that this person received the consequence of his moral choice.
Forgiveness is not forgetting. None of us who have been deeply hurt have the capability of completely forgetting what happened to us. Forgetting is not the test of whether you have forgiven, and forgiveness will not somehow erase the memory of that hurt. Wonderfully, as we forgive, over time we often find that the memory of that fades and no longer produces pain.
Forgiveness is not giving permission for that behavior. Sometimes people are afraid that if they forgive, they are implying that the behavior can continue. Not true. Forgiveness is simply forgiving the debt. That certainly does not mean that you are telling the person, "Go right ahead and do it again." In fact, loving communication with that person with that person should make that clear!
God asks us to forgive each other. We were never meant to sustain anger and bitterness. We can't see into hearts and we do not have the wisdom to judge and punish a "fellow servant". That is up to God. Simply put; We just forgive as we have been forgiven."

Heavenly Father, I praise you and love you. Thank you for always being here... even through the fires of life. When I was a little girl you made me a promise. You promised me that all things would work to good as long as I faithfully served you and loved you will my whole heart. I am now seeing the picture that you have painted in my life... clearer than ever. And I praise you. You are so good...

Lord, I thank you for your gift of forgiveness that you gave me through your Son. Help me to continue to share this gift of forgiveness with others.

Give me the courage to set boundaries, help me to have compassion towards those who have hurt me, endurance to run the race, and continue to shower our home with your perfect peace- a peace that passes all understanding.

About Jesus...

God is crazy about you. He loves you and wants you to live forever with Him. (Jeremiah 29:11)

The problem is, the Bible tells us that not one of us is without sin. (Romans 3:23) Not only do we break God’s commandments, we fall short of His perfect standards. Even if your good deeds outweigh the bad, you’ll never be perfect as God requires us to be. Just one sin is enough to keep us out of heaven. (James 2:10)

The good news is, God sent his son, Jesus, to earth as a man over 2,000 years ago. He lived a perfect life, without sin. He then died on the cross for our sins. (John 3:16)

The judgment that God should have put upon us, He put on His son. Because He loved you so much, Jesus died in your place. He then rose again. (1 Corinthians 15:4-8)

If you turn from sin, and believe in Jesus, He will take away your guilt and you will go to heaven when you die. (John 3:16)

Jesus Christ alone can save you. If you believe that Jesus died and, rose again and that his death is sufficient payment for your sins then pray and ask God to come into your life. (Romans 10:13)

First, admit that you have sinned. Tell God you are sorry and commit to turn away from sinning. Say to Him, I put my faith in Jesus Christ. Ask God to make Himself real to you, and He will. (Jeremiah 29:13)

If you have not asked Jesus to come into your life, DO IT NOW! Don't spend another moment trying to live your life on your own. He loves you so much... More than you could ever imagine and His love is so pure and true...

Just talk to our Savior...

He's ready to listen...
